Cops Cracking Down on Holiday DUIs

The holiday season means holiday parties, many of which involve alcohol, which also means a significant increase in the number of intoxicated drivers on the roads. To protect drivers, limit accidents, and make the roads safer for everyone, police crack down on drunk drivers, putting many of their various strategies for catching these drivers to work. On this blog, we examine the methods you can expect the police to use this holiday season.

Increased Patrols

Police will frequently increase the number of patrols, particularly on busy highways and during the nighttime hours and weekends. By increasing their presence, police can more frequently catch drivers who are intoxicated, and get them off the roads before they can cause an accident. In many cases, officers will frequently hide out in areas that are populated with a lot of bars and restaurants and wait for drivers they may suspect

DUI Checkpoints

Police will also frequently set up a sobriety checkpoint at crucial locations on busy roads where intoxicated drivers will probably pass. This way, drunk drivers find their way into the hands of police and can be removed from the roads far more efficiently. While this safety screen isn’t perfect, they have been shown to dramatically reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roads, so expect to see several of these on your travels this month.

Field Sobriety Tests

If you are suspected of driving while intoxicated and are stopped by a police officer, you will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test. While you may feel as though you are required to submit to this test, and police will attempt to make it sound as though you are, you are allowed to refuse to take this test. In many instances, and their results are frequently used to find drivers guilty.

Remember, you are not legally required to answer any law enforcement questions regarding drinking and driving either. However, you will be required to submit to a breath or blood test, and refusing to do this will result in an automatic one-year license suspension.
